Each Spring and Fall, the most beautiful names in bridal from all over the world, descend on the city that never sleeps, to unveil their latest crazy beautiful gowns. In terms of reigniting our passion again and again for this thing called weddings, the fantasy found in the shows and dresses feels like an inspiration reset and a true dose of fashion magic.
Besides all the lace and tulle, florals and fairytale shapes you might expect, the Fall 18 shows threw some seriously beautiful unexpected gowns into the mix. And perhaps not unexpectedly, these highlights (for us!) were most often from designers like Viktor & Rolf, Marchesa or Naeem Khan…namely RTW designers who have entered the arena of bridal. The common thread being a willingness to push the boundaries of ‘tradition’, or to do away with it all together, creating beautifully bold, feminine gowns for the beautifully bold women who wear them.
These collections saw mini dresses, jumpsuits and bridal capes – daring designs for daring women. Find below our round up of favourite pieces from the most beautiful and unexpected stand out shows.
Berta, for daring sensuality
Who knew necklines that plunge as dramatically low as these could look quite so elegant? In a mix of sleek silhouettes, feathered plumes, decadent lace and featherweight tulle, the Berta collection offered a minxy alternative, for any brides who don’t identify with the ‘princess ballgown’ thing.
Marchesa, for dramatic femininity
The home of timeless, elegant confections Marchesa never disappoint with show-stopping, whimsical takes on tradition. This season, it was their unexpected silhouettes that caught our eye – with a stunning (heirloom inspired) bridal coat, romantic sleeves and dramatic train details. Heaven.
Naeem Khan, for achingly beautiful bohemia
Arguably the king of embroidery, these incredible gowns (plus an otherworldly jumpsuit!) are the stuff of true fashion fantasy. Think tribal tiered fringing and larger than life 3D florals. We also loved the dramatic styling of oversized chandelier earrings – inspiration worth stealing for any non-traditionalists or those with an affinity for bold accessories.
Viktor & Rolf, for romantic sculpting
Pairing the smoothest silks with cascades of textured tulle, these gowns are an engineering feat. A kind of beautiful contrast of complex simplicity. Utterly modern options like a super feminine, sculpted jumpsuit sat alongside serious ballgowns, straight out of a Grace Coddington worthy Editorial. Swoon.
